Poet’s Corner
Ode to the
4th of July
By Jerry Yass, a Broken Sound resident.
The following was written by Mr. Yass
on July 4th, 2016.
Here we are on the 4th of July.
Can you believe half a year has gone
by?
It’s a day to remember our nation’s
birth,
So we celebrate with a great deal of
mirth.
Hot dogs and burgers are topped with brown deli mustard,
For dessert we eat ice cream and delicious custard.
Our nation was founded because of rulers who were cruel.
We fought them and, thankfully, we won the duel.
Our Founding Fathers did what was right;
They hit a home run that went out of sight.
It proves that good will overcome might.
The Declaration of Independence says “All Men are Created
Equal;”
In all of history there has never been a sequel
Immigrants from all over the globe came here to stay,
To raise a family and avoid the fray
It was they who made our nation great,
So full of love and not of hate.
It seems I have written this tribute in rap;
It has been fun and I hope you don’t say I am a sap.
Lin Manuel Miranda wrote the musical “Hamilton” for me
and you,
Won’t be upset that an old Jew can rap too.
I say to our kids that history is not a mystery.
Some say that our country is no longer “hot.”
No, no kiddies, it’s very hot because of immigrants who didn’t
“give up their shot.”
Now let’s lift our glasses to toast the good old U.S.A.
And pray that this nation of ours is here to stay.
