She would fill the bathtub with scalding hot water before
dinner and after the meal she would add cold water and
everything would be perfect, except she didn’t tell anyone.
My mother believed in getting information, never giving any.
During dinner I had to go to the bathroom. As a
youngster, nine years old, I didn’t need anyone to take me,
I just went on my merry way. We didn’t have wall switches,
just a string to pull to put the light on, but the string was
gone. All that was left were a few tiny metal balls that were
attached to the fixture which I couldn’t reach. So, I climbed
up and stood on the rim of the bathtub, lost my balance
and fell with my left leg into the scalding hot water. We
lived in Brooklyn and my screams must have been heard
in New Jersey. My family gathered around me, blowing on
my injured leg, which had lost most of its skin when Mama
pulled off my stockings. The family broke raw eggs over my
burned leg and someone was sent to the corner drugstore to
call for an ambulance. At that point we were in the midst
of a blackout, so it was forever till an ambulance arrived.
It took many months of sitting for hours in a free clinic,
as we didn’t have money for a private doctor, to have the
wound heal, because every time they changed the bandages,
I howled as they pulled off more skin.
To this day my left leg is scarred but I am grateful I was
lucky enough not to have fallen in with my face or I surely
would have died. A good angel must have been watching over
me and that fortunately has since kept me out of hot water.
