      Movies Leave Me

      By Judith Levy

I used to love to go to
      the movies but sadly the
      movies have left me behind,
I’m a relic from the old
      days when films were a
      happy pastime. First of all,
      they certainly gave us our
      money’s worth. We were
      offered a double feature, a
newsreel, a weekly chapter where the main character almost
died, but didn’t, coming attractions and if you were lucky,
you might even get a plate, so with enough attendance you
could save up and get a new set of dishes. Today those
      dishes would be collector’s items.
Now if you get to the movie theater in spite of concerns
about COVID, you will be offered a shoot ‘em up, car chasing
drama and a script that strains your ears to hear the dialogue,
because the new breed of actors straight out of drama school,
you’ll find as a group clearly mumble. What did he say? I
      don’t know.
Oh, how I loved Gone With The Wind, The Wizard of
Oz, Random Harvest and Mrs. Miniver. I even loved Psycho,
though it scared me out of my wits. And the MGM musicals
were such a joy. Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Judy Garland
and Kathryn Grayson all drew me to the movie palaces and
whisked me gently off to dreamland. Now the movies just
seem to want to show me the seamy side of life and charge
me three dollars for popcorn in the bargain. So lately I’m
staying home and finding tv isn’t offering much better fare.
My only hope is TCM where they show old movies. The
best is when they have a month of Academy Award winning
films. My favorite is Gaslight with Ingrid Bergman.
They just had a writer’s strike and actors too refused
to work. It made no difference to me. I’ll take notice when
they come up with something worth watching, at least for
someone who remembers and loves movies of the past. Till
then I’m going to the library to get a good book.
