      Clowns On Call
By Harriet Rubin, aka Halloween is always a difficult time for clowns in
Florabelle the Clown general, and my discussion about “haunt” or “scary”
clowns resulted in some open clown conversations on
October is here! When Facebook. Consequently, I believe the country will
I lived in New Jersey, this see more clowns donning this type of makeup and
was my favorite time of taking part in haunted houses and other kinds of paid
year. The beautiful colors experiences. After all, no clown skills are required for
of turning trees really was this type of gig! Can you see a scary clown giving
breathtaking. Of course that a balloon dog to a child, with a grotesque smile on
meant someone had to rake his face? If a child already has some fear of clowns
up all those leaves, but even in general, this could result in a lifetime phobia. So,
that was fun at times. Of course, Florida is beautiful all those of us who are happy, caring clowns will not
year round, so I’m not complaining. dress as clowns for Halloween, and will do our best
We had a great time at Boca Helping Hands, “Bowling to enjoy this wonderful holiday! Boca Pointe “Clowns on Call” 2023

the photo. That’s one of the frustrating things about being When folks hear that I am a clown, the very first thing they
interviewed or photographed, the lack of input or control you ask is “Do you go to hospitals?”
have with the source, but at least we made it to the paper! Years ago, in New Jersey, I set up volunteer clown services
in 3 of the 4 hospitals in Bergen County and my old alley still
services 2 of them, (before COVID). Here in South Florida, the
only hospital with a clown visiting program was Delray Medical,
but not since COVID. Juggles was a regular volunteer there
but not anymore. For some reason the average person thinks
of hospitals as being the primary place clowns service, and this
is very inaccurate. “Caring Clowns”, which is our category, go
anyplace where they can bring joy and smiles. There is no limit
to the groups we have entertained. If anyone is curious, take a

and you will see a small part of what we have accomplished in
the past 8 years. So— think about all the groups you may belong
to, or your families are involved with, or your grandchildren
go to. They all have events, fun raisers, parties, celebrations,
many of which would benefit from having clowns there. And,
JJ, Cutie Pie, Florabelle, and Juggles at Boca Helping Hands don’t forget, if it’s a non-profit group, as most groups are, there
“Bowling For Bread” is no charge!!! We really need to get back into what we love to Florabelle at the Fuller Center doing magic!
