Since retiring from her role as director of programming
at the Gene Siskel Film Center, formerly The Film Center of
the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she served in
various positions for 45 years, Scharres currently works as a
Chicago-based freelance journalist and consultant to filmmakers
and film distributors. While at the Gene Siskel Film Center, she
oversaw more than 1,500 programs a year that included surveys
of national cinemas, retrospectives, thematic programs, and
premieres. She also supervised and carried out the curatorial
and research functions of the organization.
Scharres is a film scholar, writer, and lecturer who has
published feature articles in criticism in film magazines
and journals, including Film Comment, American
Cinematographer, Chicago Reader, Variety, The Independent,
