Protecting Our Environmental
Heritage With The Martin
County Genealogical Society
Although genealogists are primarily focused on
discovering their human ancestry, our geographical
environment is also an important aspect of our shared
heritage. At the Martin County Genealogical Society’s March
2023 meeting, Dr. Peggy Macdonald will discuss her book,
Marjorie Harris Carr: Defender of Florida’s Environment.
For 35 years, Carr, a self-described “housewife from
Micanopy,” led a coalition of citizen activists to protect and
restore central Florida’s Ocklawaha River. To this day, the
river is blocked by remnants of the Cross Florida Barge Canal,
a project that Carr and her fellow Florida Defenders of the
Environment stopped before its completion. Dr. Macdonald
will share images from Carr’s collection, the Matheson
History Museum and other repositories.
Native Floridian Peggy Macdonald, Ph.D., is a public
historian and adjunct professor who has taught at Stetson
University, Indian River State College and Southern New
Hampshire University. She has written about local and Florida
history for FORUM magazine, Gainesville Magazine, Our
Town Magazine and Senior Times. In 2014, the University
Press of Florida published her book, Marjorie Harris Carr:
Defender of Florida’s Environment. Macdonald received her
Ph.D. in American history from the University of Florida.
Free and open to the public, the meeting will be at the
Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road in Stuart, from 1
to 3 p.m., Friday, March 17. To participate via Zoom, go to
mcgsfl.org and register by March 16.
The Genealogical Society offers a variety of services at the
Genealogy Room in the Blake Library in Stuart including an
extensive research library, access to several genealogy websites
and assistance from MCGS volunteers. For more information
about membership, activities and services go to mcgsfl.org.
