Robin Leach, the host of the then-extremely popular Serving Palm Beach County CPC # 1457468 • LPG#30099
television show Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,
attended as a guest of Macy’s. Then-Florida Governor Bob
Martinez spoke, although he twice misstated the name of
      our city as Palm Gardens.
Built for an estimated $150 million by The Forbes
Co., on 100 acres leased from the John D. and Catherine
      T. MacArthur Foundation, the mall encompassed 1.35
million square feet of retail space.
On opening day Sears, Macy’s and Burdines were
the anchor stores joining 140 specialty stores (112 were
actually ready on opening day). Burdines, which was a
Florida-based department store chain that closed in 2004,
had built its largest store to date and anchored the end of
the mall now occupied by Nordstrom.
Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue were added by
1990. The retail mix was carefully selected and many of
the smaller stores were opening either their first stores
or their first stores in Florida.
Do you have a favorite mall store? Do you own any
mall relics you’d like preserved? We’d love to see them
or hear your original Gardens Mall stories. Please add a
